For this design I explored Bruno Munari’s Design as Art, focusing on design as a form of artistic expression. Diving deep into the relationship between functionality and beauty in utilitarian design- incorporating Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s principle, “form follows function.” Targeting all individuals with an appreciation for experimentation.

“The Building Blocks” is a collection of words from Design as Art into a typographic book to explore the timeless process of book design. Showcasing the relationship between form and function through visual communication.

The book incorporates design sketches and ink smudges to reflect the raw design process. Further pushed with scanned and manipulated sans-serif type combined with handwritten elements. Using a high contrast, primarily monochromatic aesthetic to highlight key design principles while emphasizing form and structure.
